I wouldn't mind seeing gas prices high to keep people thinking of ways to save money or reduce reliance on cars, but I see it also props up governments like Venezuela, etc.

I think that a lot of people have adopted practices that reduce dependence on gas, now hopefully they'll stick.

Unfortunately, changes like that never seem to stick for the long term. After prices run up from $2 to $4, a dip to $3 suddenly makes gas feel cheap, and people let their guard down.

I think it all depends on the type of changes that people make -- some "green" measures have higher upfront costs but lower long-term costs, and a situation like this can help cross that hump.

But I think the real question is why don't these alternatives stick? Are they not economically viable when gas is cheaper? Are they more inconvenient? It seems that this can be handled from more a public policy standpoint.
