Suppose that Every Day Ten Men Go Out For A Beer

Suppose that every day ten men go out for a beer and the total bill for all 10 comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

That did make sense. I don't like the last point, that the guy might not show up anymore, "that is move to another state/country". I think that even if we get taxed a lot, we still love where we live, and we would rather fight the taxes, then move somewhere else. Plus it costs more to move yourself, money, or your company to another location.

The argument could also be made that living in a nation of wealth presented the rich man an opportunity to be in the position that he was in. Were he to move to another country, sure he may be able to avoid higher taxes, but would the opportunity to make as much money as he was making back home be available in that other place?

It's safe, corruption is limited (depending on who you ask!), and you aren't going to find those two aspects of life in the US in a place with lower taxes. :)

philiparthurmoore - well said! This analysis is pretty specious, and assumes that salaries are a) 100% equitable b) proportional to the amount of economic value that their recipients deliver. I think the author is right to point out that blind animosity directed towards the rich is pointless, since entrepeneurialism and good management add value to the economy. At the same time, the rich are also equally dependent on the poor, the exploitation of whom being one of the key sources of profit. The rich man in this article forgets that the poor customers probably brewed, bottled, and served him his beer, whereas he is probably an owner (perhaps of the bar?).

Read to the end. I really don't think the "atmosphere is friendlier" overseas when it comes to taxes. Check out the marginal rates when you step outside our borders.

An amusing and well-crafted anecdote, but clearly one sided. So what's the proposition, that we all pay a flat tax? Is it *really* a good idea to be asking those who make the least to be paying more tax?

And please, don't try to tell me they aren't paying any right now. The low income workers pay employment taxes like the rest of us. And they pay sales tax, which takes a far higher percentage of their income than it does of the higher income workers.
