I agree with the author that it is worth considering whether a website is necessary. Especially if the website is sloppy/substandard, it's probably better to have nothing at all. Or, if the business thrives based on word-of-mouth or spontaneous walk-ins, it's also probably better to apply your resources towards more effective projects.

I think it's pretty amazing if any business still doesn't have a web site. I don't think it's too expensive to have a decent design etc.

It does not matter if the business is small or big. In today's digital world, every business needs a website to promote things at a faster pace.

Agreed. It's almost getting to the stage where for smart smaller companies every employee needs a lifestream or similar.

I agree 100% with sunnyspeaks. If you can't afford a big elaborate website just grab a quick free template based one or even a free blog. I even know some companies will do just a my space page.

A MySpace page wouldn't work for every industry / market though. For some more staid industries perhaps a Wordpress blog with an elegant theme would be a better 'quick fix'? I wouldn't want to send my mum to MySpace... ;)
