Is the point of this article that I as a reader should do this, too? I honestly don't understand the point of these kinds of posts. The end of the post encourages me to explore the unknown for the sake of exploring the unknown. There is zero analysis of whether giving up $70k/year was indeed the right choice. I'm betting it wasn't, because I can't imagine valuing the things in that bulleted list at $70k each year!

It's a gamble that you will eventually be making the same or more money. Let's just be honest about that and stop talking about these side benefits that we're using to justify our decisions in a post-hoc fashion. How many articles do you come across that say "giving up $70k/year to start a business was the worst decision in my life"? None. Zero. Nada. Because if anyone actually ADMITS that to themselves, they're too embarrassed to admit it to anyone else.

So all we get is this self-reinforcing cognitive dissonance, and I can't help but wonder how many people out there get "motivated" by this stuff and end up taking risks they shouldn't.
