Title says it all. If you've cut your budget to the bone, then the only way to improve things is to start earning more money. Here are some ideas.

Most of these tips are naive: find another job? Ask for a raise? This must be some kind of joke. I think better advice is to look for more ways to trim the fat, rather than ways to increase your income. Plus with the stock market in the toilet, and abysmal yields on treasury securities, there isn't really a way to "beat the system" in the current environment.

Sometimes all the fat is trimmed. What then? While improving your situation in your current job, or picking up a second job might not be very realistic right now, there are a lot of other options on that list. Many aren't very attractive but, as you yourself said, there's no way to "beat the system."

What would you suggest that people do if they've already cut their budget to the bone and still can't make ends meet? The only option at that point is to earn more. It's "naive" to think otherwise.

Ok, not 33, there are hundreds of such ways to earn extra money. But ironically, they are not effective. In the end, you will need hard efforts and a piece of luck to earn extra bucks, if there are any!

For most people, IMHO the best way to earn more money in the short-term is to ask for (and deserve) a raise or get another job in the same field that pays more. I know it's more exciting to write about setting up weekend coffee shops or growing tomatos for market in your back garden or whatever, but it's hugely more practical to fish where the fish are.

Alas, as the blog says this isn't the best time to be looking for more money, given the start of the economy... (In the long-term it may be better to retrain or start in business yourself, of course).
