I think starting salaries have increased significantly over the last few years - the last five years in particular. But we can't say the same over the next five years.

It's hard to generalize this. Starting salaries in the health industry have grown faster than inflation. Starting salaries in education and mid-level management have not. What are the implications? Well, that the market currently values health careers more than education and mid-level management.

Not sure it's that simple, bizpundit. What is "the market"? Saying "the market" controls what careers are more valued sounds fatalistic, when in reality the decisions of everyone from political leaders (tax and financial policy) to the average Joe (consumer spending and union participation) influence what careers and salaries "the market" values most.

Yeah, it was simplistic. By the market I really meant just "what we as a society collectively value"

Over the last eight years (Bush administration...) the average American has gotten poorer. Due to the unequal distribution of economic growth, our money is now depreciating faster than our salaries are increasing. I really wish inflation/budget deficits became a political issue, but apparently abortion/gun control are more important to people than the fact that the US is slowly going bankrupt.
