Very helpful discussion of the ABCs of the index. Thought it is perhaps telling that ABC would be compelled to put such basic info the on the web. It is scary how little americans know about the fundamentals of our economy!

Yes, going to the basics always helps, especially during the crisis. The current meltdown teaches us that we need to learn more about investing, stocks and market.

It is certainly important to understand stock market indexes; while the DJIA and S&P500 are generally representative of the strength of the stock market and carry important psychological implications, it's also important to drill into specific sectors, as companies in so-called "defensive" industries (inelastic demand) will certainly outperform those that rely on consumer spending, for example.

Paul, I'm positive that there are tons of people who would benefit from learning something (anything?) about investments. Whether they choose to do so as a result of my little site remains to be seen.
