Tax Deductions For Bloggers & The Self-Employed.

Since a lot of you either run your own business or are bloggers yourselves, I thought posting a list of some of these deductions I take would help you in getting ready for tax season.

Definitely a good effort by the blogger to address an important topic. That said, there are some pretty serious oversimplifications here. So please be sure to double check anything before going and buying something assuming it's deductible.

(For example, you can only deduct the entire cost of a computer if you use it *exclusively* for your business.)

A very helpful list. Thanks. Do be sure to check with an accountant. The IRS sometimes frowns on certain deductions for home-based businesses, even if they are legit. Better safe than sorry and ending up being audited. In particular, I've heard they frown on a portion of rent/ mortgage being deducted, but there may be more items.

Yeah, most of the items on this list seem pretty questionable. In the (unlikely) event that you do get audited, you can bet that the IRS will stick it to you. There is no way you can claim a gym membership as a legitinate business expense. I think as more people switch to less cut-and-dired professions, such as blogging, the IRS is going to begin cracking down, or at least intensify the tax treatment of such individuals.

Simply toooo gooood, I think this list puts me out of the tax bracket; how about adding "employee remuneration" to that. Sometimes I get others to do a post for me and I pay them for it.

As somebody who makes a living doing taxes, I'm amazed at this article. Much of it is simplified to the point of falsehood. Other parts of it are just blatantly untrue. (Gym membership?! Cable TV?!) I'd bet the farm that no IRS auditor would let either of those slide.
