I'll resist the temptation to say "give it to me". Oh wait, I didn't resist. Personally, I'd go for a really "accurate" Market Index fund and apply DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging). Because if an index mutual is well setup and truly represents one of the market indexes, then whenever it goes down, you'd get more units with your regular weekly/ monthly contribution into it. And if that's even too risky for you, what about an online savings account?

it depends upon your present financial needs, short-term needs, and your long-term requirements. depends on how much you have in hand.. the best thing for a not-too-adventurous middle-class guy to do is to go for tax-free short to mid-term investments and if he still has something left over, put in a safe long term investment
